U.S. NABCI Committee's 3 to 5-Year Vision

In January 2005, the U.S. NABCI Committee agreed to a 3 to 5-year Vision developed by Staff. The purpose of the Vision is to energize and provide focus for the Committee and the bird conservation community in their efforts to facilitate integrated bird conservation in North America. Below are the Committee's vision statements for five critical components of integrated bird conservation in the United States.

The Committee also produced a 2006 Action Plan to help realize these visions. See the NABCI Update fact sheet for more information on the Committee's efforts in 2006.

  • Monitoring
We envision effective and efficient integrated monitoring programs, capable of determining status and trends of priority bird populations, as well as limiting habitat and land use factors, are in place, institutionally supported, and consistent with Mexico and Canadian programs.
  • Conservation Design
We envision all bird habitat joint ventures operating effective, practicable, scientific processes that produce landscape-scale integrated analysis and strategies (i.e., decision support tools) to help guide partners in the U.S. in their efforts to conserve all priority birds and habitats.

  • Institutional Support
We envision federal and state agencies institutionalizing and supporting standard components of the integrated approach to bird conservation in natural resource management, administration, and practices across the country.

  • Land Management Recommendations
We envision private landowners, including industry and non-governmental organizations, regularly incorporating bird conservation priorities and objectives into their land use plans and land management practices.

  • International Efforts
We envision partner organizations in the U.S. prioritizing international bird conservation work by focusing on increasing funding for priority bird species and habitats, improving our understanding of limiting factors, and increasing communication and collaboration among conservation partners internationally.
